Brooklyn is Co-developing Mail Robots.

Brooklyn is Co-developing Mail Robots.

Brooklyn is co-developing mail robots, or mailbots. How will this emerging technology change the way mail is delivered in NYC and across the world?

Ottonomy has offices in Brooklyn.

Ottonomy was founded in Santa Monica, California. Their focus is on producing autonomous robots for contactless deliveries. The robots are supposed to be able to navigate multiple types of terrain, and thus are suited for indoor or outdoor use.

Ottonomy introduced its autonomous postal robot along with Arrive’s digital-secured mailboxes.

Arrive is an Indianapolis-based company and has teamed up with Brooklyn’s Ottonomy. Both of these technologies are yet in the prototype stage, but have been deployed across the country for residential and commercial uses. The collaborators’ goal is to show how to streamline the mail delivering process so it’s more effective, safe, and secure. Many Brooklynites can definitely agree that our postal service needs to be streamlined and more effective.

What do mail robots and digital-secured boxes mean for the future of the postal service?

Job scarcity is a growing anxiety for many as more sectors of job markets are automated. Will Brooklynites feel the squeeze with this initiative? Ottonomy says their aim is to supplement where there are worker shortages. Another concern is how secure these technologies will be. There is something reassuring about a physical key and lock and a trusted person in charge.

Despite concerns, it is good that Brooklyn is co-developing mail robots.

People tend to fear more when there is a great leap in thought or technology. It is sad to see the world you once knew fade away. Job scarcity is a real concern, however it is important to remember that ai technology will create many job opportunities in the place of those it takes over. Computers stop working and need to be updated by computer technicians. Wheels break and need repairs from mechanics. This is an exciting time to be a Brooklynite!

Those are my thoughts, but please share yours below.
